‘PAT’ at work – China’s population of people & SUVs

ere is a good illustration of the PAT formula which outlines the interaction of the three core pressures that are undermining life on Earth. P is for population, A is for per capita consumption or ‘affluence’ and T is for Technology, the means by which we cater for all those ‘mouths’ and the amount they consume.

P is critical since it is the only variable that automatically increase the impact of the other two. But all three count. It is daft to any single variable to the exclusion of the others.

In China numbers are huge and still increasing. But so too is per capita consumption and people are choosing new and even less sustainable means by which to satisfy their wants as this example illustrates.

As the Chinese dream expands from one child to two, auto makers hope the size of the family car grows as well.
